Protein Molecular Modeling Activity

Complete the following activities to understand how the instruction set in DNA is converted into a protein.

DNA to Protein - steps you through the whole process to give you an overview.

Modeling Transcription - practice matching the correct nucleotides to create mRNA.

Modeling Translation - see again how the mRNA is used as a template for tRNA to match up the correct amino acids and build the protein at the ribosome.

Mutations - change the DNA nucleotides to see how you can change the final protein. Try to make one change to create a different sequence of amino acids. How 'different' can you make it with just one mutation? Try to 'break' the creation of the protein by creating an early 'stop' codon. (hint: after you make a DNA change, you can click on show protein to skip having to watch transcription and translation and just jump to the final protein.)

DNA the Double Helix - this is just here to remind you of the structure of DNA and let you play around with different views. You can drag the DNA around, zoom in/out, change the model to a ball and stick, view hydrogen bonds etc.
