Element Creation

Where did the elements in our universe come from? Watch the following video and answer the questions below.

Where do elements come from?

1. Where did the following atoms in your body originally come from? The answer may be different for each.
(take time to appreciate this amazing fact!)

Hydrogen & Helium & Lithium -
Most all the rest -

2. What function does each subatomic particle (proton, neutron, electron) do for the elements? (as discussed in class)

3. What happens to the atom/element if we change the number of protons? electrons? neutrons?

4. What did the periodic table look like 3 minutes after The Big Bang?

5. What are stars, including our sun, made of? (include percentages)

6. What force initially made stars from the 'soup' of hydrogen and helium after the Big Bang?

7. Why do we use emission/absorption line spectra? What lab did you do in school that relates to this idea?

8. How many more elements do we think there are in the universe that aren't already on our current version of the periodic table?

9. What do we call it when we join 2 atoms to make a single more massive atom?

10. What do we call it when we take one massive atom and split it into 2 lighter elements?

11. Why is it hard to fuse atoms together? (why don't the atoms genearally 'want' to come close enough together to fuse)

12. Why can our sun only make a limited number of elements on the periodic table? What do we need to happen to make the more massive elements?

13. What is the most stable element in the universe, and therefore does not give off energy if you try to use it in fusion or fission?

14. Depending on the time frame, the atoms in a human body, after death, will end up where?

Within ~100 years after death -
After ~ 5 billion years -
